Permutations: Who can book their tickets to Paris on September 2?

MANILA (Philippines) – There has been no lack of drama at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 and we’re heading for even more excitement with entering a the final day of the Classification 17-32 Round.

16 teams are now in contention to win the title in the Second Round. And 16 teams are still fighting for an Olympic qualification through the classification 17-32 Round.

All the information on the direct qualification to Olympic Games for each continent can be found here in the qualification tracker here.

Here’s a look at the situation ahead of September 2. We’ve done the math, so you don’t have to!

Olympic Games Qualification

September 2nd, 17-32 classification round

Asia

All Asian teams are still in contention to qualify directly for the Olympic Games as the best ranked team from Asia in the World Cup.

Japan is the only team that have their destiny in their hands. Japan will play a “Final for the qualification to the Olympics at home” against Cape Verde. If Japan win, they will qualify.

If Japan lose against Cape Verde, all Asian teams are still in contention.

Africa

All African teams are still in contention to qualify directly for the Olympic Games next year as the best ranked team from Africa in the World Cup.

Egypt and South Sudan are in the best position to do so after they registered victories on Thursday and both improved to 2-2 records.

Egypt will qualify for Paris if:

-EGY beat NZL and

-ANG beat SSD

South Sudan will for qualify for Paris if:

-SSD beat ANG and

-NZL beat EGY

If both South Sudan and Egypt win, then the team with the highest points difference will qualify.

Currently, Egypt have a +3 points difference. South Sudan have a +2 points difference.

The race for the best ranked team from Africa in the World Cup will be wide open should both South Sudan and Egypt lose. 

Americas and Europe

No other team can qualify directly for the Olympic Games on September 2.
